21st Century Survival Skills

We have been looking at what skills we will need to succeed in our 21st Century future...


1. Critical thinking and problem-solving
  • Asking questions that enable them to approach problems and challenges as a learner (as opposed to a knower)
  • Ability to apply abstract knowledge to solve a problem and to develop and execute a solution

2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence
  • Working with networks of people across boundaries and with different cultures towards a common goal
  • Citizenship Education is about enabling people to make their own decisions and to take responsibility for their own lives and communities

3. Agility and adaptability
  • Being able to think, be flexible, change and use a variety of tools to solve new problems.
  • Being able to manage unpredictability

4. Initiative and entrepreneurialism
  • Self directed people who seek out new opportunities, take risks and find possible creative solutions to challenging problems

5. Effective oral and written communication
  • The ability to communicate one’s thoughts clearly

6. Accessing and analysing information
  • Manage the astronomical flow of information
  • Deciding what information is important for your purpose

7. Curiosity and imagination (creativity)
  • Engaged and interested in the world
  • Being curious about why things are the way they are
